71-Year-Old Completes Iron Dog
Next time I grunt as I strain to get out of my chair I’ll probably feel a little foolish. I recently read an article about a 71-year-old man who was part of a team that finished what might be the toughest snowmobile race in the world – Alaska’s Iron Dog.
Gene Tharpe of Bradenton, Florida (yes, Florida!) flew up to Alaska to compete in the Trail Class. This class races from Big Lake (near Wasilla) and finishes up in Nome – over 1000 miles away!
The six-man team had a combined age of 339 years – an average of 56.5 years old. Tharpe was the oldest member of the team and the oldest rider to ever finish the race.
