Sault Ste. Marie, Mich. has rolled out the white carpet for snowmobiles this year as automobiles will now share city streets with snowmobiles.

Already identified with snowmobiling thanks to its status as home to the International 500 snowmobile endurance race, Sault Ste. Marie is surrounded by a system of groomed trails. Local businesses put out welcome mats every winter to attract snowmobile tourism dollars.

City officials are hoping that opening the city streets will be seen as the ultimate invitation to snowmobile enthusiasts.

“After coming off the trails, visitors can drive directly to their motel or hit a local restaurant or pick up supplies at a store,” says Linda Hoath, executive director of the Sault Convention & Visitors Bureau. “With the opening of city streets, they can access virtually every location by snowmobile.”

The new ordinance does outline some restrictions. Some of the city’s busiest thoroughfares are off-limits, but secondary streets and alleys should eliminate any need for those streets. Restricted streets include M-129, I-75 and the I-75 Business Spur.

All snowmobilers below the age of 18 must carry a state-issued safety training certificate. Any driver below the age of 16 must be under the direct supervision of an adult. A curfew is also in place. Between the hours of 1 a.m. and 6 a.m., snowmobile operation is prohibited within the city limits.
