The 55 mile Central Lakes State trail passes through 3 counties and 10 communities. The area is known for a possible exploration zone for Vikings in the 14th century.

Located almost entirely on former railroad grounds, the 49 mile trail between Park Rapids and Cass Lake was one of the first rail-to-trail projects in the U.S.. Most of the trail is level except for a four mile segment north of Walker featuring sharply rolling terrain.

This generally level trail is rich in history, passing near thirteen recorded prehistoric sites. Originally the home of Ojibwe and Dakota natives, the region has a long logging and railroad history.
