This snowmobiler has been a bit ‘old school’ when it comes to snowmobile wear. My reasons were established over decades of trying the latest and greatest whatever wear.

When riding in severe and challenging snow conditions, what was preferred is what we trusted based on what has worked for us over the years. Wool works. Cotton breathes. The early synthetics tended to be clammy and cold. But, as the years wear on, we are starting to see a trend in general sports wear, specifically in winter wear, that we are embracing. Today’s new fabrics actually work as claimed.

One of those items we’ve found that works well is Ski-Doo’s new Technical Fleece jacket. Made up of a fabric comprised of 90 percent polyester and 10 percent polyurethane, the fleece garment has proven great for all types of outdoor activities — and snowmobiling!

We’ve had the jacket since midwinter and used it under our main snowmobile jacket on cold days and as our outer jacket in spring conditions. It makes a great addition to your sledding kit because it can be part of your layered attire on severely cold days and useful as après-snowmobiling style.

The jacket features a nice protective collar when fully zipped up. There are three front pockets: two side pockets and a chest high pocket for a cell phone, wallet or whatever. The zippers come with a cloth tail so you can zip up with a gloved hand. While we have not had any problems with the zippers, we are leery of the smallish-toothed zip rail and would like to have seen Ski-Doo go with something a bit more rugged. Maybe you’re the gentle type, but when out snowmobiling and fumbling to unzip a pocket to reach for a wallet… well, we can be a bit bullish!

The Technical Fleece jacket surprised us with its generous cut. Not of a svelte nature, we could actually have gotten by with a size smaller as this garment is cut with extra room in mind. In this garment’s case, you don’t have to worry about sizing as you do with so much of today’s sled-oriented apparel. The sizing seems to run true to what we’d call small through extra-extra large.

While we started out wearing the garment as part of our snowmobiling kit, we’ve found ourselves wearing it when out on the boat fishing or riding our motorcycle. It helps that the Technical Fleece jacket is both waterproof and windproof, making it a well-designed, basic garment well suited for many activities.

Garments such as this one have helped change our opinion about modern ‘miracle’ synthetics. Heck, we’re even wearing those new sweat-absorbing synthetic t-shirts under this fleece jacket. What’s next?

If you’d like your own Ski-Doo Technical Fleece jacket, you can order it through your Ski-Doo dealer. Suggested retail price is US$119.99. Basic black is the only color available at this point.
