U.S. Census Gets Help from Sledders

The U.S. Census is going all out to make sure everybody is counted – even courting the help of ATVers and snowmobilers.

At the recent Eastern Maine Sportsmen’s Show, a U.S. Census employee manned a booth as he looked to hire people to reach residents who live off the beaten path using snowmobiles, ATVs or anything else that gets the job done.

“Here in Maine, our effort is to get at those places where we know you’re not going to be able to get in your car and drive there,” U.S. Census employee David Slagger told the Bangor Daily News. “So we figured, people that come to the Sportsmen’s Show might have ATVs or four-wheel drive [vehicles] and could possibly be interested in working for the Census Bureau.”

According to Bangor Daily News, one resident will require a census worker to take a 16-mile ride into the woods and then snowshoe or hike another mile to find him.
