Toronto inventor Shawn Walting has designed a rear-axle drive system that he says makes snowmobiles faster, improves braking, and uses less fuel. We heard about Walting’s story thanks to an article in Popular Science about his RAD (Rear Axle Drive) Technology.

According to the article, Walting outfitted a Ski-Doo REV XP snowmobile with RAD and the results are shocking. The snow contact area of the sled’s 121-inch track is reportedly boosted by 43 percent versus a conventional setup. The sled saw a top speed improvement of 10 percent (about 112 mph), and a 72 percent boost in fuel economy (from 10 mpg to 17 mpg).
