Wisconsin snowmobilers will have to lay off the throttle in the evenings after Gov. Jim Doyle signed a bill that has established a permanent 55 mph speed limit for snowmobilers after the sun sets.

The 55 mph speed limit is not unfamiliar to Wisconsin sledders, as it has been in place off and on since 2006; however, it was set to expire on July 1 if lawmakers didn’t make it permanent.

Supporters of the speed limit say it will help reduce snowmobile crashes and fatalities in the state.
